The Beginnings – Clara Barton
The Presbyterian Church at 810 Princess Anne, Fredericksburg, VA, was dedicated in 1833, oldest house of worship in Fredericksburg. The Church was used as a hospital when Federals occupied the town after the battles of Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse. Clara Barton nursed soldiers here, as did Walt Whitman.

Excerpts from Chapter files. June 1919…During this month we assisted about 5 families in obtaining allotments. Investigated two tuberculosis cases and visited one, which we found able to work and needed no assistance. October 1919….Some 10 to 15 families assisted in getting allotments. The Fredericksburg Red Cross Chapter was instituted on June 1, 1917 at the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce. Present at this meeting were Judge John T. Goolrick, presiding as temporary chairman. Mr. W.J. Ford was elected Chairman, Mrs. D. Wheeler elected as Vice-Chairman, Mrs. Franklin Stearns elected Secretary and J. Conway Chichester as Treasurer.
